Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
